‘Titles’, Tiles, Lewisham (KNULP/Tiles exchange)
Exhibited in a fully-tiled gallery that was once a butcher’s, Tiles is also geographically proximal to a long-established tiling business. The window display of the latter, in its severe formality, incidentally and uncannily echoes more minimalist/conceptual tendencies in contemporary art.
In the specific instance of this artwork, a large photograph of this local commercial display was displaced into the materially fitting setting of the Tiles gallery. Simply leaning against the tiled wall, the work functioned tautologically like a discarded billboard that pointed both inwards, to the gallery’s nominalisation, and outwards, to an adjacent functional space that happens to look like art.
