Elevation

Alex Gawronski, Elevation, 2023
(Timber, acrylic paint, carpet)
SCALA, Leichhardt, NSW
An artificial extension of the existing steep staircase of the building in which SCALA is housed on the third floor. The most apparent architectural feature upon entering this space, the staircase extended assumes an almost expressionist exaggeration. Metaphorically, Elevation might also speak to those underlying imperatives in our culture that favour the promise of hierarchical ascension, the ‘rising above others’ endemic to neoliberal capitalism’s vision of ‘life’. Of course, infinite extension is a myth as there is always a wall, always a ceiling.
